El Salvador borders the Pacific Ocean in the south, and is known for its beautiful beaches, coastal towns, volcanic crater lakes, and volcanic ridges. Other tourist destinations include the famous Tazumal archaeological site, home to an ancient Mayan urban complex from 8th century AD. As one of many countries located along the Pacific Ring of Fire, El Salvador is associated with consistent tectonic activity, and rich volcanic deposits have contributed in part to significant global biodiversity in majestic rain forests and coastal plains. With fertile soil and tropical weather, El Salvador is an important exporter of sugar cane, bananas, nutmeg, seafood, and more. Its coffee industry has powered the Salvadorian economy and continues to remain influential among increased competition in the global market.

Regarding Salvadorian cuisine, this style of cooking incorporates influences from indigenous Native American and other European cultures. Many traditional Salvadorian foods are prepared with maize (corn) and beans, and El Salvador’s most notable dish is the pupusa, a thick corn or rice flour tortilla flatbread stuffed with cheese, pork, and refried beans. Served with tomatoes, pickled vegetables, or squash, the pupusa is a delicious local dish that has also gained popularity worldwide. Chef Reyes’ amazing pupusa dish will also be available at Brasserie.
