Mr. Roy Thomasson, Chair of YABT/ OAS Visited Amb. Carlos S.C. Liao, CATO’s Executive Director

2013-08-28

As invited by the Global Talentrepreneur Innovation and Collaboration Association (GlobalTIC), Mr. Roy Thomasson, Chair of Young Americas Business Trust (YABT), Organization of American States (OAS), revisited Taiwan to deliver a keynote speech and to join the judge panel for the 2013 GlobalTIC Award & Forum which was held in Taipei from 8/19-8/23. Mr. Thomasson, accompanied by Mr. Daniel Yang, Senior Lecturer & Consultant of GlobalTIC, took the occasion to avail their tight schedule particularly in coming to pay a courtesy visit to Amb. Liao, CATO’s Executive Director, on 8/23.

Mr. Thomasson and Amb. Liao made their acquaintance back in 2003 when Amb. Liao was Deputy Secretary General of the International Cooperation and Development Fund (TaiwanICDF). Under the sponsorship of TaiwanICDF to facilitate the multilateral interaction among the young entrepreneurs, Mr. Thomasson was invited to Taiwan to enhance cooperation projects regarding exchanges of experiences, practices and development for incubating young talents to start up for their entrepreneurship between Taiwan and the member countries of OAS. The experiences observed in Taiwan were hence applied by YABT as part of its curriculum in promoting youth entrepreneurship in Central and South Americas. Since 2006, consequently, YABT has been touring around the said region to organize the yearly event of Talent & Innovation Challenges of the Americas (TIC Americas; the 2013 event was held in Guatemala), which has become the biggest competition of business start-up for entrepreneurs under 35. As a matter of fact, nearly 2,000 teams from 35 countries participate in this international event every year. Later on, Mr. Thomasson and Amb. Liao went on with certain mutual collaborations in some Latin American countries, such as Mexico and El Salvador, to which the latter was posted as Taiwan’s diplomatic mission chief.

YABT and GlobalTIC both operate as main promoters to encourage the young generation to start up with their own business. Amb. Liao praises such visionary mission and admires the efforts contributed by these two organizations. “CATO aims to enhance the interaction among the enterprises between Taiwan and Central America,” emphasized Amb. Liao, “and the initiative to guide the young entrepreneurs in Central America to create their own business, based on the Taiwanese experiences, deserves to be recognized and replicated as much as possible.” In this case, CATO would consider the possibility to collaborate with the YABT and GlobalTIC while a tripartite negotiation could be conducted as soon as possible to reach a mutual agreement for signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). Under the joint efforts of YABT, GlobalTIC & CATO, the experiences and know-how from Taiwan regarding the start-up entrepreneurship may eventually be extended to share with the Central American allied countries. Accordingly, a more frequent exchange is expected to be generated along with a new pattern of cooperation to be set up, in the process to further consolidate the business and investment cooperation ties between Taiwan and its Central American allies.
