Taiwan, Czechia national museums sign cooperation pact

Taipei City-based National Palace Museum and Prague-based National Museum concluded an exhibition cooperation agreement June 12 in Taipei City, marking another milestone in the already friendly Taiwan-Czechia ties.
 
Under the pact signed by NPM Director Hsiao Tsung-huang and his Czech counterpart Michal Lukeš, a special exhibition showcasing pieces in the Taiwan museum’s collection will be staged at the Prague institution from September to December next year.
 
Themed “100 Objects, 100 Stories: Treasures from the National Palace Museum,” the event will feature some of the facility’s most iconic pieces such as Jade Cabbage, a carved jadeite head of bok choy with a locust and katydid camouflaged in the leaves dating back to the Qing dynasty (1644-1911), and “Along the River During the Qingming Festival,” a handscroll painting depicting the landscape and daily life of Bianjing during the Northern Song period (960–1127).
 
Hsiao said the upcoming exhibition has been 20 years in the making due to regulatory challenges. It was made possible in part by the successful staging of “A Thousand Faces of Formosa─The Nature and Tradition of Taiwan,” which was organized in 2005 at the Prague facility by National Taiwan Museum.
 
Hsiao thanked the Czech government and National Museum for their assistance in the process, adding that the event is of great significance as it coincides with the NPM’s 100th anniversary.
 
In response, Lukeš thanked the NPM and Czech Senate for supporting the necessary legislation to make the exhibition a reality, while Jiří Drahoš, first vice president of the Czech Senate who was at the NPM to witness the historic moment, said he expects the exhibition to become a major cultural attraction.
