Taiwan team wins Ansys simulation software contest

A National Taiwan University of Science and Technology team recently won the 2016 Ansys Hall of Fame Competition for excellence in simulation software.
Comprising Hsu Ching-chi, associate professor in applied science and technology at NTUST, as well as students Shih Po-yu and Weng Chi-hsuan, the team finished equal first with two outfits from Germany and the U.K. At total of 20 teams contested the finals of the annual competition organized by U.S.-based Ansys Inc., a leading developer of simulation software.
It is the second consecutive year for a group from the Taipei City-based tertiary institution to claim top honors in the academic category of the event.
The team’s virtual model of the upper human body features 160 bones and soft tissues, as well as 30 muscles and ligaments. It simulates biomechanical performance of intervertebral discs in the neck, and serves as a platform for providing reliable data on surgical techniques and physiological movements.
Hsu said the team is grateful for the recognition of its hard work and vowed to continue leading NTUST to top honors on the international stage.
“The enormous potential of Taiwan’s young talents is front and center during the competition. They must be further nurtured and encouraged to take part in similar competitions around the world.”
According to Hsu, the model shows that artificial disc replacement is more effective in treating cervical degenerative disc disease than anterior disc removal or spinal fusion.
This finding is of interest to leading local orthopedic surgeons like Dr. Shih Kao-shang from Taipei-based Shin Kong Wu Ho-su Memorial Hospital, Hsu said, adding that the medico is planning to use the model in preparing for related surgeries.
Since its launch in 2010, the annual competition is responsible for spotlighting an array of cutting-edge simulations with far-reaching academic and commercial applications.
