Charity solo exhibition gets underway in Hsinchu

2016/01/20

A charity solo exhibition by Yang Yin-chai opened Jan. 13 in Hsinchu County, showcasing the octogenarian artist’s signature works and industrial-influenced painting techniques.

Featuring 63 oil, pastel, traditional Chinese and watercolor pieces, the event offers a fresh take on Yang’s innovative use of glass, gravel and sawdust in her creations. It runs until Feb. 14 at Museum of Fine Arts operated by the Cultural Affairs Bureau under Hsinchu County Government.

CAB Director-General Tsai Jung-kuang said Yang is a trailblazer in experimenting with various materials and modern techniques. “The graduating, multilayered effect in her paintings appeals to art lovers from home and abroad. Her works reflect the color and vibrancy of a lifetime in Hsinchu County.”

Born in 1936, Yang is a self-taught artist who exhibited from 2002 to 2005 at the Louvre Museum and Salon of French Artists, as well as staging 26 solo exhibitions around Taiwan.

One highlight of the event is an abstract oil painting containing strong colors such as black, orange and red. Yang said Jan. 19 that she embraced the abstract style after years of producing rural-themed pieces. “The dramatic visual impact of abstractionism is more in keeping with my deep passion for the arts.”

Of equal interest is another oil painting dominated by a gravel application. The work depicts a courtyard photographed by Yang during a trip to mainland China over a decade ago.

“The serene and peaceful imagery better helps me to visualize this special moment in my life,” Yang said. “I dedicated an enormous amount of time to selecting small stones so as to faithfully create an eye-catching 3-D effect.”

According to Tsai, all proceeds from the sale of the artist’s paintings will be donated to the Hsinchu branch of Taiwan Fund for Children and Families. “It’s Yang’s express wish to give back to the local community in the best way she knows how,” he said.
