3-D sand casting service center inaugurated in Kaohsiung

A service center aimed at introducing 3-D printing technology to Taiwan’s sand casting industry commenced operations Dec. 26 in Kaohsiung City.
In the inauguration ceremony, Premier Mao Chi-kuo said this is just the beginning of many government measures to promote innovation among Taiwan’s traditional industries and reposition them in global supply chains.
“By creating a better and more challenging work environment, the project will bring about a revolutionary change and transform the industry into one driven by advanced technology and innovation,” Mao said, adding that it will also encourage the involvement of the younger generations.
According to the premier, given that most local firms in the sector are small and medium enterprises with limited resources, the center will cut their product development costs and time to market by serving as a premium platform for conducting product sampling and trial runs.
Supported by the Metal Industries Research and Development Center under the auspices of the Industrial Development Bureau, the facility will offer much-needed assistance in such key areas as computer simulations and analysis, heat treatment technology, material selections, post-casting treatment and solution design.
Mao said the center will help double the average prices of locally produced cast products and set a great example for other sectors seeking innovation though 3-D printing technology.
The southern promotion office for Productivity 4.0 was simultaneously inaugurated by the premier at the same location as part of government efforts to foster smart manufacturing and services in the country.
The premier expects the office to boost businesses in southern Taiwan not only in the industrial sector, but also in agriculture and commerce.
