2015/12/18

Winners of the annual Mobileheroes Awards were honored Dec. 16 in Taipei City, underscoring ROC government efforts promoting innovation and entrepreneurship among the youth of Taiwan.

Organized by the Industrial Development Bureau under the Ministry of Economic Affairs, this year’s competition saw 345 teams contest four categories and cash prizes totaling more than NT$3 million (US$91,047).

Locally based startup ChaseWind won gold in the category of smart city applications and services for its innovative sports sunglasses. The eyewear utilizes 3-D and see-through technologies to display crucial information such as angular velocity, cadence and heartbeat rates for cyclists.

Sky Sentry, a team of students from National Cheng Kung University and Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology, swept the field in the category of Internet of Things and wearable devices.

Employing the LinkIt One platform provided by Taiwan high-tech heavyweight MediaTek Inc., the group developed a monitoring system for unmanned aerial vehicles. The device, boasting several safety features, can detect unusual circumstances and request a course adjustment if necessary.

In the category of software-defined networking, top prize went to a student team from National Central University in Taoyuan City for its SDN-based solution streamlining the addition, deletion and revision of network service functions. Gold for 4G/B4G smart device and antenna designs went to an outfit from National Defense University.

Another highlight of this year’s competition is the first-time participation by schoolchildren. A four-member team from Taipei City-based Rixin Elementary School was shortlisted and won a special prize for their wearable physical monitoring device.

Some of the awarded submissions will be displayed at the 2016 International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. First place-getters are to also receive business incubation services provided by the event’s corporate sponsors.
