Taiwan’s green efforts showcased at UN summit

2015/12/03

An exhibition showcasing Taiwan’s achievements in promoting carbon reductions through green architecture is set to kick off Dec. 4 on the sidelines of the 21st Conference of the Parties to the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change taking place in Paris, according to organizer Delta Electronics Inc.

Highlighting the diverse range of eco-friendly buildings the firm has constructed over the last 10 years for educational, industrial and residential purposes, the exhibit will underscore Taiwan’s pioneering efforts to minimize its carbon footprint via smart architecture, said Bruce Cheng, founder of the Taipei City-based electronics company.

“This exhibition marks a new milestone for Delta’s participation in UNFCCC-related events over the last eight years,” Cheng said. “We have demonstrated that by making our architecture green, we have been able to reduce energy use by 80 percent, with the remaining 20 percent capable of sustaining operations.

“In addition, by utilizing more energy-efficient power sources, we can bump up power conservation to 96 percent for many buildings, edging closer to the goal of constructing a sustainable city.”

Especially noteworthy among the exhibits is Delta’s Neihu headquarters in Taipei City. Built in 1999, the facility is 58 percent more energy efficient than traditional offices thanks to its adoption of a green energy management system in 2014.

Cheng also reiterated the company’s commitment to reducing corporate greenhouse gas emissions, an initiative supported by the U.K.-based nongovernmental organization CDP.

“We have reduced power consumption in our production processes by 50 percent over the past five years, and we are working to cut an additional 30 percent by 2020.” He added the company will use its expertise in this regard to help Taiwan achieve its national goal of bringing down overall greenhouse gas emissions to 50 percent of 2005 levels by 2050.

Cheng, Delta Chairman Yancey Hai and Chief Executive Officer Cheng Ping are also in Paris for various COP 21-affiliated forums and meetings. They will share the corporation’s experience in the areas of green architecture, innovative energy strategies and sustainable cities.

The “Delta 21 Green Buildings Exhibition” will be staged at the Grand Palais in Paris until Dec. 10.
