Taiwan to hold 2017 world IT congress

2015/10/23

Taiwan is set to host the 2017 World Congress on Information Technology, showcasing the nation’s rising IT integration capabilities, according to the Ministry of Economic Affairs Oct. 21.

Considered the Olympics of the information communications technology industry, the World Information Technology and Services Alliance-affiliated event was previously held in Taiwan in 2000. The congress is expected to attract 80-plus WITSA members accounting for over 90 percent of the global ICT market.

MOEA Deputy Minister Shen Jong-chin said the event is an ideal opportunity to share Taiwan’s achievements in realizing advanced integration of hardware and software.

“As a key player in the global ICT industry chain, Taiwan demonstrates remarkable results in promoting innovative, open and smart development sectorwide,” Shen said, citing award-winning performances in the areas of cloud computing, communications and R&D.

Shen said the local ICT industry has seen foreign investment increase substantially over the years, with the younger generation’s participation rising steadily. “The congress serves as the perfect venue for Taiwan to flex its muscle in this regard while raising the nation’s global profile.”

Founded 37 years ago in Spain, the biennial WCIT has become an annual event following charter amendments in 2014. The 2016 congress is set to take place in Brazil, with the 2017 Taiwan edition set for September. The latter is expected to coincide with Computex Taipei, one of the world’s largest ICT trade shows.

“We are looking forward to the synergy created by combining these large-scale events,” Shen said. “There is every reason to believe that this platform will deliver significant business opportunities and technological advancements for all participants.”
