Asian Girls’ Rights Alliance launches in Taipei
2015/10/13
A multilateral initiative advocating equal rights for young women was launched Oct. 10 in Taipei City as part of locally staged events marking U.N. International Day of the Girl Child.
Organized by Taiwan-headquartered nongovernmental organization Garden of Hope Foundation, Asian Girls’ Rights Alliance comprises more than 300-plus organizations from 24 countries and territories. The inaugural meeting involved regional representatives discussing such issues as female participation in public affairs and the right of young women to self-fulfillment.
GHF Director Chi Hui-jung said the alliance aims to further improve the lot of young women in Asia, as many are victims of underage marriage, human trafficking and sexual assault, as well as discriminatory treatment in terms of education, health and safety.
“It is imperative to squarely face these problems and find viable solutions by working to eliminate gender prejudice and stereotypes,” she said. “Taiwan should lead the way, capitalizing on its achievements in this regard.”
In addition to the meeting, an awards ceremony was held recognizing the achievements of young local women in the areas of community, courage, creativity, science and sports. A total of 14 winners were honored for exhibiting remarkable tenacity in the face of adversity.
Two overseas participants were also lauded for contributions to enhancing women’s status in their respective countries. They are Chanda Jat of India, awarded for advocating abolishment of underage marriage, and Shopna Sathi of Bangladesh, for defending women’s basic rights and political participation.
“The pair is truly an inspiration for female empowerment,” Chi said. “There is every reason to believe that through this alliance, we can all join in paving the way toward a brighter future for girls in Asia.”
