Taiwan beefs up system integration exports

A system integration promotion office was inaugurated Oct. 5 in Taipei City by Premier Mao Chi-kuo, spotlighting the commitment of the government to transforming Taiwan into a supplier of quality turnkey solutions.
“Taiwan’s existing export strategy focusing on low-margin, price-sensitive components and parts is facing serious challenges given the changing dynamics of the global economy,” Mao said during the ceremony.
“We must direct our attention to exporting high value-added systemized products and services, especially to emerging markets. At the same time, greater emphasis should be placed on developing brand names and online business opportunities in these parts of the world.”
According to Mao, the government has identified 10 sectors for strategic promotion. These include cloud systems, e-government, green transportation, light-emitting diode lighting, medical services management, smart campuses and solar energy.
“Our enterprises have developed successful operating models in these sectors with great export potential,” he said, adding that some of the standouts are YouBike and electronic toll-collection systems.
“We will leave no stone unturned in fostering a nurturing environment for incubating such cases and helping introduce successful experiences to other export-oriented sectors.”
Citing industry estimates, the Ministry of Economic Affairs said the 10 strategic sectors are expected to generate trade openings topping US$318 billion in 2020.
“We are working with related ministries and agencies in connecting local firms to potential markets and tackling possible barriers,” an MOEA official said.
“In supporting the targeted industries, we will also spur local hardware manufacturers, software developers and related suppliers,” the official said, adding that plans are in the pipeline to involve more potential candidates through creation of a business cultivation platform.
