New Taipei City expands cultural heritage list

2015/09/23

Two traditional arts were recently awarded cultural heritage status by New Taipei City Government, underscoring a commitment to preserving arts and crafts diversity in the northern Taiwan metropolis.

The clay works of New Taipei resident Yang Jui-hsi and Gaojia opera by Nanguan Hsin Chin Chu Opera Company were given the unanimous thumbs-up during an experts’ committee meeting convened Sept. 15 by the NTCG Department of Cultural Affairs.

“These additions satisfy relevant regulations spanning artistry, distinctiveness and uniqueness,” a DCA official said. “They also recognize the significant and valuable contributions and efforts of Yang and the opera company.”

Yang, who studied under legendary jiannian, or cut-and-paste, sculpture master Hung Kun-fu, has dedicated nearly 50 years to the traditional art. His colorful and vividly patterned creations adorn temples nationwide.

According to the DCA, Nanguan Hsin Chin Chu is the only group in Taiwan able to perform the unique Gaojia opera using a traditional repertoire, setting and singing skills. “Its leader Chen Chin-chi is also working tirelessly to promote the opera on university campuses in New Taipei and Changhua County,” the official said.

Gaojia is a form of Chinese opera renowned for its various clown roles. It emerged at the end of Ming dynasty (1368-1644) and originally comprised part of a religious parade.

Yang and the opera group will be presented with certificates and cash prizes of NT$20,000 (US$6,072) each during an upcoming ceremony. The DCA will also arrange exhibitions, performances and workshops to promote the pair to a wider audience.
