Taiwan assists Asia-Pacific rural revitalization

2015/09/16

An international observation mission studying Taiwan’s successful experiences in spurring its rural economy got underway Sept. 14, further underscoring the commitment of the government to promoting inclusive development in the Asia-Pacific.

Organized by the Council of Agriculture, the five-day mission comprises 42 members from 18 countries of the Asian Productivity Organization and Asia-Pacific Association of Agricultural Research Institutions.

The experts and industry professionals will tour the rural communities of Beipu and Xinpu Townships in Hsinchu County; Sanzhi and Wugu Districts in New Taipei City; and Yuanshan in Yilan County.

COA Minister Chen Bao-ji said Taiwan can make a real contribution to building prosperity and sustainability in the Asia-Pacific, and is excited to host the collaborative initiative.

“We are an Asia-Pacific leader in agricultural personnel training and justifiably proud of our six-tier specialized development program,” he said, adding that since 2010, Taiwan has strengthened the economic sustainability of 800 rural communities through improving the environment, promoting agritourism and upgrading production value and processes.

“A total of 2,000 communities have signed on for the program, and we expect to see this number double by 2020.”

According to Chen, another benefit of the undertaking is its effectiveness in encouraging young people to return to their rural roots. “These individuals possess enormous potential and are adding fresh impetus to the revitalization cause,” he said.

“We are working to create a brighter and more prosperous future for our country communities and believe that our example can inspire similar initiatives throughout the Asia-Pacific.”
