TTIA plans fourth terminal for 2018

2015/09/15

A fourth terminal at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport is set for inauguration in 2018 as part of government efforts to better cater for increasing arrival numbers at the facility.

Although smaller than its existing counterparts, the 26,000-square-meter terminal can accommodate four narrow-body and one wide-body aircraft simultaneously. State-of-the-art features such as computerized check-in systems, as well as fast-track customs and immigration clearance, should see it handle a projected 5 million visitors per year.

Wen Yung-sung, senior vice president of Taoyuan International Airport Corp. Ltd., said work on the NT$2 billion (US$61.6 million) project is slated to commence in mid-2016.

“Together with the expansion of Terminal Two scheduled for completion in 2017, the new facility is expected to boost the airport’s annual capacity from a present 32 million passengers to 42 million by year-end 2018.”

According to Wen, Terminal Four will offer increased convenience to users through direct access to the newly constructed Taoyuan International Airport Line. “The A12 metro station on its underground level provides rapid links between the airport and downtown Taipei City,” he said.

“With a full check-in service available at Taipei Main Station, we are confident the facility will prove popular with those passengers using its predominantly budget and direct cross-strait services.”

Ministry of Transportation and Communications statistics reveal that TTIA processed 35.8 million passengers via its first and second terminals in 2014.

This figure is expected to reach 40 million in 2015 and see 10 percent growth annually going forward, the MOTC said, attributing the rise to the booming local airline industry, robust development in cross-strait travel, and visa-free entry and landing rights privileges offered by 148 countries and territories to ROC citizens.

As part of efforts to keep pace with heightened demand, a full-capacity third terminal is being developed to accommodate 45 million additional passengers. This will allow the airport to lift annual arrival and departure figures to 86 million by 2042.

Tenders for the NT$48.8 billion project are to be finalized in October, with facility scheduled to be up and running in 2020.
