Tea factory claims Taiwan architectural award

2015/09/01

Daxi Tea Factory renovation project in northern Taiwan’s Taoyuan City was named Aug. 30 winner of the inaugural Far Eastern Group architectural renovation award and a cash prize of NT$500,000 (US$15,257).

Implemented by Taipei City-based Divooe Zein Architects, the undertaking beat out 29 other submissions on the strength of its open air design and attention to detail.

Chief architect Divooe Zein said the 89-year-old facility lay abandoned for nearly a quarter of century before the project began in 2010. “Such an endeavor was a real challenge, especially given the two-storey factory’s unique place in Taiwan’s tea industry.

“It is always a tough task to strike a balance between the preservation of existing elements and the introduction of new ones.”

According to Zein, one of the key features of his design is the transformation of a warehouse into an ecological pond. Surrounded by corridors, the pond exudes a sense of tranquility and has become a top attraction of the facility.

Another project winning the hearts of the six-member judging panel was Zhongzheng Hall in Taoyuan City’s Bade District. The undertaking earned a special mention along with a cash prize of NT$300,000. Initiated by Wilderness Field in Taipei, the project reflects the collective memories of the local community and epitomizes Taiwan’s cultural diversity.

In addition to honoring excellence in architectural design, the FEG architectural award aims to promote preservation of historical heritage while fostering sustainable development in Taiwan.
