Exhibition reveals wartime lives of ROC nationals

A special exhibition showcasing the sacrifices and struggles of people in Taiwan during the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945) is underway at Zhongshan Hall in Taipei City.
“The Story of the Great Age” centers on the realities of life under Japanese rule (1895-1945). This includes comfort women depicted in the featured documentaries “Song of the Reed” by Wu Hsiu-ching, and ROC military personnel in “Taiwan Years-A Tribute to Our Armed Forces” by Wang Tien-li and “The Rocking Sky” by Chang Chao-wei.
Wu’s film shows how six Taiwan women exhibited enormous courage to overcome their traumatic wartime experiences, while Wang’s and Chang’s offerings pull back the curtain on the extraordinary bravery of ROC service members in helping secure the Allied victory in World War II.
An official with organizer Taipei City Government’s Department of Cultural Affairs said the exhibition offers showgoers a glimpse of the hardships endured by the people of Taiwan and ROC military personnel, as well as their indomitable will to triumph under trying conditions.
In addition, several time-significant documents like copies of the Treaty of Shimonoseki in 1895, when Taiwan was ceded to Japan, as well as the Japanese Instrument of Surrender in 1945, which heralded the return of Taiwan to the ROC, are also on display.
Other highlights are a series of seven seminars from Aug. 22 to Oct. 24, and two old-time concerts scheduled for Oct. 16 and Oct. 25, respectively.
