New Taipei readies for performing arts event

2015/08/21

A community-focused performing arts initiative is set to get underway Aug. 23 in New Taipei City, underscoring the commitment of the local government to fostering a greater appreciation for all aspects of culture in the northern Taiwan metropolis.

Organized by New Taipei City Government’s Cultural Affairs Department, Performing Arts in the Community features 31 groups staging 20 sessions in each district every Friday to Sunday through Nov. 7. The lineup includes acrobatics, amateur and professional singing and thespian performances, children’s dramas, dance shows, orchestra concerts and Taiwanese operas.

New Taipei Mayor Eric Chu said residents are certain to be entertained by the diverse array of talent on offer during the event. “In the past, if one felt like taking in a show, there was no alternative but a trip to National Theater and Concert Hall in Taipei City.

“It’s time to leave behind the confines of such big venues and take top-notch cultural productions to the people.”

Echoing Chu’s remarks, CAD Commissioner Lin Kuan-yuh said every effort is being made to ensure that residents in all areas of the city can take part, even rural Gongliao District in eastern New Taipei.

The first performance is “Grand Immortal of Ponglai” by Ming Hwa Yuan Arts and Cultural Group at Sanchong Gymnasium. Although debuting more than 20 years ago, the classic Taiwanese opera now boasts a 21st century upgrade in the form of state-of-the-art lighting and sound equipment. In addition, the action will be projected onto a 400-inch screen.

Over the following weeks, National Taiwan College of Performing Arts, Chi-Chao Opera Troupe and Shiu-Kim Taiwanese Opera Troupe, in that order, will show their wares at locations around New Taipei.
