Winners of the 2015 Tseng Hsu-pai Journalism Award were recognized Aug. 10 in Taipei City, spotlighting the accomplishments of Taiwan media professionals producing news reports with strong human interest and local life angles.
A team from Taipei City-based TV channel CTi News won for its expose on how life has changed in the northeastern county of Yilan since the opening of Hsuehshan Tunnel nine years ago.
“While the tunnel has made travel to the region more convenient and spurred local tourism, it has also affected quality of life,” a team co-producer said. “The report invited deeper contemplation on the impact of economic development.”
TVBS, another local outfit, shared the honor with a piece on the predicament of Syrian refugees in a shelter on the border of Jordan and Turkey, a subject rarely seen on local TV.
“The lot of these refugees may seem divorced from everyday life in Taiwan, but the loss of human rights and dignity experienced by these people goes beyond the boundaries of ethnicity,” the judges said. “The report inspired moral reflection from the audience and promoted awareness of humanitarian care.”
Also presented on the day were Delta Energy and Climate Special Awards. The four winners are CommonWealth Magazine for a piece on electronic waste; National Education Radio for a series on the impact of the Hualien-Taitung Area Development Act; TVBS for its coverage on Israel’s water management practices; and an independent review on the Chernobyl nuclear disaster.
According to sponsor Delta Electronics Foundation, recipients of the special awards will receive financial support to cover the Paris Climate Change Conference in November.
