ROC Cabinet gears up for Productivity 4.0
2015/08/11
The global competitiveness of Taiwan’s industrial sectors is set for a shot in the arm under an NT$36 billion (US$1.13 billion), nine-year Productivity 4.0 promotion, according to the Cabinet Aug. 9.
Part of the government’s response to the fourth industrial revolution in major economies such as Germany, Japan and the U.S., the initiative features key measures such as developing smart factories for diversified and digitalized production; employing big data in planning production and predicting sales; and increasing total manufacturing output with enhanced autonomous capabilities.
“The ultimate goal is to facilitate Taiwan’s industrial upgrade through securing core technologies, as this will ensure the country remains at the forefront amid intensifying global competition,” a Cabinet official said.
“In this way, the nation can become a provider of turnkey solutions for cutting-edge hardware, innovative services and software, which is a key component in the government’s new export promotion strategy.”
According to the official, the Cabinet has identified eight sectors for strategic promotion: agriculture, food manufacturing, information technology, logistics, machinery equipment, retailing, textile and transportation.
“The government will also assist 100,000 small and medium enterprises in these sectors with developing upgraded value creation capabilities,” the official said, adding that Vice Premier Chang San-cheng is organizing a task force overseeing interagency efforts.
Another measure in the pipeline, the official said, is establishing an industrial advisory committee for canvassing input from the private sector, as well as spurring collaboration with academia.
“We have every reason to believe that this initiative will help Taiwan lay the groundwork for achieving industrial transformation and creating a new range of products tailored to meet the needs of 21st century consumers.”
