ROC Cabinet targets Taiwan export promotion

Taiwan will transform into a leading provider of system integration services and turnkey solutions under the government’s export promotion strategy, according to Premier Mao Chi-kuo Aug. 6.
“We need a new approach in response to the changing dynamics of the global economy,” Mao said. “All agencies have been directed to step up coordinated efforts in addressing the challenges arising from this undertaking.”
Taiwan’s current export strategy of delivering intermediary goods produced in less developed countries to major markets must be adjusted in light of the shrinking margins for such products, the premier said.
“It is imperative local exporters re-engineer themselves to become manufacturers of high-end consumer goods and systematic products or services targeting the global market, especially emerging countries.”
Drawing on the successful experiences of local firms in boosting Taiwan’s exports through manufacturing activities in mainland China, Mao said the government will assist businesses in setting up operations in other locations, enabling them to give the economy fresh momentum.
The Ministry of Economic Affairs has identified a raft of sectors for strategic promotion, including cloud systems, e-government, green energy, medical services management, oil refining and petrochemical manufacturing, smart campuses and transportation.
“Taiwan has proven a front-runner in these sectors, with successful examples including the Etag electronic toll collection system and YouBike bicycle sharing system,” an MOEA official said, adding that such projects will serve as flagship examples for related promotional initiatives.
Going forward, the ministry said it will roll out more plans targeting potential-laden sectors like big data, Internet of Things, Productivity 4.0 and smart cities.
