Taipei gears up for September summer jazz party

2015/08/03

The annual Summer Jazz Party is set to kick off Sept. 18 in Taipei City with an open-air concert at organizer National Theater and Concert Hall’s Art Plaza.

Headed by two-time Golden Melody Award winner Timeless Fusion Party, the festival spanning three nights features performances by Danish jazz vocalist Sinne Eeg, local a cappella group Semiscon Vocal Band and Friends, and Vincent Hsu with the Journey Through Jazz sextet, appearing in that order.

The third night finale will be an encore by Eeg in collaboration with NTCH Jazz Camp Orchestra.

“It is a great pleasure to welcome Eeg for her debut concert in Taiwan,” an NTCH official said. “The seventh edition of the outdoor event is sure to enthrall old-time fans and new audiences.”

After a fortnight’s break, the festival will resume with an array of indoor performances at the plaza, including five-time Grammy nominee and JazzWeek Vocalist of the Year 2005 Tierney Sutton. The U.S. artist will take to the stage Oct. 8 in what is certain to be a master class from the oft-described “musician’s singer.”

Continuing the next day is an international lineup comprising local musicians like Hsu Yu-ying, Rich Huang, Nick Javier, Peng Yu-wen, Nicholas Russilion, Tung Shuen-wen, Stacey Wei and Yohei Yamada, as well as Cuban Paquito D’Rivera and American Michael Philip Mossman.

New Orleans legend Ellis Marsalis Jr. will close the event Oct. 16. The patriarch of celebrated Marsalis family, which boasts 60 years of jazz music ties, is set to bring the curtain down on the celebration of music with the groovy notes of his vintage piano quartet.
