ROC Cabinet launches global recruitment platform

2015/07/31

A strategic network aimed at enhancing overseas talent recruitment for Taiwan and meeting increasing local demand for high-end professionals is scheduled for launch Aug. 7 by the ROC Cabinet.

Comprising 32 service and matchmaking centers at the country’s embassies and representative offices worldwide, the platform will serve as a catchment for global professionals mulling business and employment opportunities in Taiwan. It is expected to grow the local talent pool and provide a short-term solution to graying demographics.

Vice Premier Chang San-cheng said July 28 that the initiative involves the joint efforts of the National Development and Overseas Community Affairs councils and ministries of Economic Affairs, Education and Labor.

“An interagency taskforce will keep a close on the progress of the undertaking and make adjustments accordingly. It is imperative we build a solid foundation of human resources to meet industry challenges of the 21st century.”

According to the NDC, areas targeted under the scheme comprise biopharmaceuticals, medical devices and smart system integration applications like big data, cloud services and Internet of Things. Efforts will also be made to boost incentives for foreign students to remain in country and work after graduation.

A points-based system was launched in July 2014 to facilitate this goal, the MOL said, adding that 770 applications were approved by the end of last month, delivering a 40 percent year-on-year rise in the number of students joining the nation’s workforce. The ministry expects to greenlight another 1,200 applications by year-end, lifting the total to 2,500 in 2016.

Once the full effect of the Cabinet’s strategy begins to be felt, Chang said he is bullish on the government making significant headway in addressing Taiwan’s demographic and labor issues.

“This raft of policy initiatives will prove effective in managing talent pool changes and meeting the needs of industry, while enhancing our competitiveness and deployment in the global marketplace.”
