Poll finds TV remains Taiwan’s No. 1 media platform

Television continues to be the most popular form of media in Taiwan, according to a survey recently released by Taipei City-based Shih Hsin University.

Conducted by SHU Institute of Knowledge Economy Development, the annual intergenerational poll on media usage shows TV at 92.1 percent, followed by the Internet, 77.7 percent; newspapers, 46.4 percent; radio, 36 percent; and magazines, 28.6 percent.

The survey also lists TV as the leading source of news at 58.9 percent, with the Internet following at 28.6 percent.

According to the poll, Formosa TV, TVBS News and SET TV are the three most watched TV stations in that order, while Public Television Service, TVBS News and Formosa TV are the three best overall channels.

Regarding newspaper readership, The Liberty Times and Apple Daily share top spot, followed by United Daily News. The trio is also the three overall leading publications of their kind in that order.

In terms of magazine readership, Business Weekly, Next Magazine and CommonWealth are first, second and third, respectively, while Business Weekly, CommonWealth and Global Vision Monthly are the three best overall magazines.

Taipei City-headquartered Broadcasting Corp. of China, Police Broadcasting Service and UFO Network are the three most popular radio stations, as well as the three leaders in overall quality.

First conducted on a paper basis in 2003, this year’s poll involved telephone interviews and received valid responses from 5,000 individuals aged 15-74.
