Inventors from Taiwan won 17 golds, 17 silvers, eight bronzes and three special awards at the Macau International Innovation and Invention Expo July 3-5, maintaining the nation’s four-year run of top-spot finishes at the event.
Beating out nearly 400 submissions from eight other Asian countries and territories, as well as Poland, the homegrown talents reaffirmed Taiwan’s growing reputation as a hotbed of creativity, according to Taipei City-based World Innovation Intellectual Property Associations.
Among the gold-winning submissions was a smart Chinese tea set developed over 12 months by students from the Department of Digital Design of Miaoli County-based Asia-Pacific Institute of Creativity.
Comprising a rotary tray, teapot and tea cups with a chip at the bottom, the device automatically fills a cup with water by detecting its weight change.
Equally impressive was a multifunctional umbrella designed by students of Overseas Chinese University in Taichung City. Equipped with light-emitting diode, or LED, lighting that automatically switches on in lowlight conditions, the umbrella features a handle that can emit sounds in case of emergency.
Another notable entry was a power generation system for automobile brake disc by Chienkuo Technology University in Changhua City. In addition to enhancing heat dissipation, the system can convert this energy to power audio or navigation devices
CTU was the biggest winner in Macau with five golds.
