2015/07/01
President Ma Ying-jeou is departing July 11 for an eight-day trip to ROC diplomatic allies Dominican Republic, Haiti and Nicaragua, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Accompanied by an 80-plus group of public and private sector representatives, Ma will take the opportunity to further boost bilateral relations with the Latin American nations. He is also expected to review progress on joint cooperation projects. Key members of Ma’s entourage include MOFA Minister David Lin, National Security Council Secretary-General Kao Hua-chu and Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) Chairman Liang Kuo-hsin. The accompanying businesspeople are drawn predominantly from the light-emitting diode, or LED, and solar energy sectors. MOFA Deputy Minister Simon Ko said June 29 that the trip underscores the effectiveness of the government’s rock-solid adherence to viable diplomacy in expanding Taiwan’s international space. “It will also help promote exchanges among the green sectors of each country.” The president is scheduled to make an outbound leg stopover in Boston. He will tour his alma mater Harvard University with former Premier Jiang Yi-huah, currently a visiting scholar at the renowned U.S. educational institution. On the inbound leg, Ma will stopover in Los Angeles before touching down July 18 in Taiwan. This is to be his 12th overseas visit since taking office in May 2008.
