New Taipei blaze victims receive nationwide support

2015/07/01

Taiwan’s public-private sector resources are being mobilized in support of those injured during a flash-fire that swept through an after-dark water park dance party June 27 in Bali District, New Taipei City. The latest initiative involves a task force established by the Ministry of Health and Welfare to monitor the conditions of the 493 victims and oversee the provision of responsive care. Hospital capacities and medical resources around Taiwan have been integrated through this mechanism. Premier Mao Chi-kuo said nationwide skin donations are proceeding according to plan, and the MOHW is arranging for the procurement of artificial skin. “Burns care and necessary medication is in place for a three to 14-day period, while anti-inflammatory drugs are in ample supply with a 10,000-strong inventory.” Medical expenses arising from the emergency response will be covered through a special fund, not the National Health Insurance program, Mao said. The MOHW estimates that a total of NT$200 million (US$6.5 million) to NT$600 million may be spent on equipment, personnel and supplies required for what is largest burn treatment in Taiwan since the 1999 Jiji Earthquake, he added. Sources familiar with the matter suspect that the flash-fire occurred after colored powder sprayed into revelers caught alight. Of the 494 affected, one died June 29 and 267 remain in a critical condition at 47 hospitals around Taiwan. An outpouring of goodwill and help has arrived from all sectors of society for the injured. Blood donors have given generously in the days following the tragedy, according to Taiwan Blood Services Foundation. Plastic surgeons, including those affiliated with Taiwan Association of Aesthetic Medicine and Surgery and ROC Laser and Photonics Medicine Society, are providing free or volunteer services for the victims. In addition, cash donations from the industrial sector poured in to a disaster-relief account set up by New Taipei City Government. As of June 29, the fund totaled NT$160 million, with sizeable contributions from Cathay Financial Holdings Co. Ltd., Fubon Financial Holding Co. Ltd., Hon Hai Precision Ind. Co. Ltd., Quanta Computer Inc., Shin Kong Group, Swancor Ind. Co. Ltd. and Yulon Group. Kaohsiung City Mayor Chen Chu also started a fundraiser in the southern Taiwan metropolis to aid the cause. “Our city survived the gas explosions last summer thanks to the assistance and support from all over Taiwan. Now it is our turn to lend a hand.” Source: Taiwan Today (http://taiwantoday.tw/ct.asp?xItem=232064&ctNode=413)
