Taiwan’s tourism lauded by US magazine

2015/06/15

Stunning scenery, fabulous food, and warm and friendly people are just some of the reasons for Taiwan’s high-profile listing June 9 as a leading travel destination by U.S.-based website Business Insider.

Describing the country as a delightful island and one of the most underrated spots in Asia, the website outlined 23 reasons why tourists should make a beeline for Taiwan.

Top of the list is the local cuisine, with beef noodle soup, bubble tea, fruit, oyster omelets and soup dumplings nominated by the website as some of the dishes people miss the most when they leave Taiwan.

The island also offers spectacular nature in nine national parks, including mountains, tropical greenery, waterfalls and white sandy beaches. “Taroko National Gorge alone is worth spending at least two days hiking its numerous scenic trails,” the website said.

Equally commendable are the affordable, clean and timely subway systems; extremely friendly and helpful people; highly popular public facilities such as YouBike in Taipei City; free Wi-Fi at all train stations and most major tourist attractions; and well-managed bathrooms in metro stops.

Other must-see tourist draws are the mountainside town of Jiufen, hot springs located nationwide, Sun Moon Lake in central Taiwan and Taipei 101—the tallest green-certified building in the world.

While Taiwan may not be big on bar culture, it is the proud producer of Kavalan Whisky, winner of numerous top-flight U.S. and U.K. tasting awards this year, the website said, adding that art facilities, cat cafes and the world record of Little League Championship titles are among many of the country’s lesser-known charms.
