ROC student stars at Graduate Fashion Week

2015/06/12

A student from Taipei City-based Shih Chien University is winner of the international award at recently concluded Graduate Fashion Week in London.

Chou Yun-ting from SCU Department of Fashion Design beat 14 rivals to sweep the Samsonite International Catwalk Competition with her six-piece The Second Sex menswear collection. It also won her top honor in the experimental category at this year’s SCU graduation fashion design competition.

“Although the fashion world has always been dominated by designers from Europe and the U.S., solid on-campus training received by Taiwan students enables them to shine in this highly competitive environment,” Chou said.

With no prior fashion experience before enrolling at SCU, Chou said she loves to think outside the box. “My winning works are made with a unique fabric of my own creation, which radiates with aesthetics of Eastern philosophy to Western eyes while exhibiting a strong scientific feel to Asians.”

As part of the prize, Chou earned an invitation to take part in September’s London Fashion Week, with some clothing houses already expressing interest in her works.

Hsu Feng-yu, chair of SCU’s Department of Fashion Design, said Chou is the third student from the university to collect the top international award in the competition. She follows Angus Chiang in 2013 and Huang Shan-liao in 2014.

“Outstanding performances of SCU graduates at the competition underscore the creativity and design capabilities of Taiwan students,” Hsu added.

Launched in 1991, the competition celebrates the creativity of students and graduates within the fashion field. It has launched the careers of some of the world’s most successful designers such as Alexander McQueen, Christopher Bailey and Stella McCartney.
