ROC helps victims of Nepal’s earthquake

A total of US$300,000 will be donated by the ROC government to victims of Nepal’s devastating magnitude-7.9 earthquake, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs April. 26.

“This contribution is made in the spirit of empathy and human compassion,” a MOFA official said. “We hope all relief and reconstruction work is carried out smoothly so those affected can begin leading normal lives as soon as possible.”

According to the official, Taipei Economic and Cultural Center in India conveyed an official message of sympathy on behalf of the government and people of Taiwan to Nepal immediately following the April 25 temblor that struck the northwest from Kathmandu in the landlocked Himalayan country.

The quake is the most severe to hit the region since 1934, international news reports state, claiming more than 3,300 lives and injuring 6,500.

“A close eye is being kept on the situation and the ministry will provide support with relief and rescue operations in Nepal as requested by TECC,” the official said. “We have set up several special accounts for public donations, and the center is coordinating with two religious organizations in Kathmandu to establish two temporary shelters.”

Taiwan’s nongovernmental organizations are also gearing up to lend a helping hand.

A medical team from Taipei City-headquartered Buddhist Compassion Relief Tzu Chi Foundation is en route for Nepal. In addition, New Taipei City-based Taiwan Root Medical Peace Corps has collected emergency supplies and mobilized volunteers. It will dispatch a medical team to disaster-affected areas May 1 the earliest.
