Taiwan makes headway on ECCT business issues
2015-04-20
Significant progress is being made by the ROC government on tackling issues outlined in 2015 Position Paper produced by the European Chamber of Commerce Taiwan, according to the National Development Council April 15.
“Aligning Taiwan’s economic regulations with international standards is a priority for the government,” NDC Minister Duh Tyzz-jiun said. “Improvement in this regard will further facilitate our integration with the global trade network.”
According to Duh, the government is assessing 249 ECCT suggestions across 14 areas. These include asset management, carbon-dioxide emission, cosmetics advertising, electronics, information and communications technology, insurance, luxury goods, medical devices, organ donations, pharmaceuticals and retail.
“After preliminary review, around 70 percent of the suggestions were welcomed by the relevant authorities, with 50 percent acted upon,” Duh said.
Two areas of key concern for the ECCT— government procurement processes and online services—are of particular interest to the NDC, Duh said. “The government is looking for ways to streamline the former and overhaul the latter. In this way, we can better meet the expectations of European firms doing business in Taiwan.”
Duh said the NDC is appreciative of ECCT input into government regulatory reform. “We are committed to following up the progress with further action, and expect to take bilateral trade and investment to the next level.”
