Best-managed Taiwan firms praised in HK poll

A total of 12 Taiwan-headquartered businesses were lauded for their professional performances and strong management practices in a survey released March 18 by Hong Kong publishing company FinanceAsia.

Sercomm Corp., Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd. and Taiwan Mobile Co. Ltd. earned top-three honors in the annual FA Best Managed Companies poll. The eight-category survey also assesses firms on the basis of such areas as corporate governance, investor relations and paying good dividends.

For corporate governance, Sercomm and TMC shared first place, followed by TSMC. In investor relations, Sercomm again finished on top, trailed by TMC and Far Eastone Telecommunications Co. Ltd. in that order. On the dividends front, Sercomm continued its winning run, with TSMC second and TMC third.

But Sercomm could not repeat its success in the best CEO stakes. Top spot went to Morris Chang of TSMC, while Yancey Hai from Delta Electronics Inc. came second. Best Chief Financial Officer honors went to Rosie Yu of TMC, with Laura Ho from TSMC finished second.

Launched in 2000, the survey was compiled using the responses of more than 250 buy-side analysts and portfolio managers with a large percentage of their portfolios dedicated to Asian listed companies.
