MOFA launches e-book ‘Taiwan A to Z’

2015-03-19

An English language e-book on Taiwan written by young adults from around the country was unveiled March 17 by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Taipei City.

“‘Taiwan A to Z’ is unique in that it offers an overview of the nation from the perspective of young people,” MOFA Vice Minister Vanessa Shih said at the launch ceremony. “We are confident it will serve as an effective tool for promoting our beautiful homeland.”

According to Shih, the MOFA recognizes the importance of people-to-people exchanges in fostering greater understanding of Taiwan around the world. “Young adults have their own concerns and perspectives … so the MOFA decided last year to publish a book about the nation especially written by young people in Taiwan for their counterparts overseas,” she said.

Containing 26 articles selected from 342 submissions by local senior high school students in a writing contest held last year, the e-book touches upon such subjects as cuisine, history, music, sport and travel. It also features colorful illustrations, eye-catching graphics and is available for free download from Apple Store and Google Play.

“The digital format allows our e-generation to read the publication on a mobile device and instantly share it with friends around the world,” Shih said, adding that plans are in the pipeline to release French, German and Spanish editions.

“We hope the publication will pave the way for young people abroad to learn more about Taiwan and understand it is a safe place with friendly people, cultural wonders and culinary delights.”
