NPM’s Liechtenstein exhibition set for April launch

2015-03-19

An exhibition of signature pieces from the collection of the prince of Liechtenstein is to open next month at the National Palace Museum in Taipei City.

“Dating back to the 17th century, the artworks belong to what is considered one of the most important private collections in the world,” NPM Deputy Director Ho Chuan-hsing said March 17. “They include a wealth of pieces from the golden era of Western painting between the 14th and 19th centuries.”

According to Ho, the exhibition comprises 100-plus artworks showing for the first time in Taiwan. These include landscape, portrait, print, sketch, still life and watercolor paintings.

Particularly noteworthy are pieces by Renaissance icon Raphael; Flemish Baroque master Peter Paul Rubens; Anthony van Dyck, leading court painter for King Charles I of England; and Dutch legend Rembrandt.

“The event not only marks the first collaboration between the NPM and the House of Liechtenstein, but is an important part of the museum’s 90th anniversary celebration,” Ho said. “It is a fitting tribute to the prowess of human creativity, and we are confident this treasure trove of Western art history will enthrall visitors from home and abroad.”

“Crown of the Alps: Masterworks from the Collections of the Prince of Liechtenstein” runs April 17 to Aug. 31 in NPM’s Exhibition Area Two.
