NMH stages cross-strait glazed pottery exhibition

2015-03-11

The first cross-strait exhibition on tricolor glazed pottery from the Tang dynasty (618-907) is getting underway Nov. 24 at the National Museum of History in Taipei City.

Marking the 60th anniversary of the facility, the two-month event features 120 signature artworks from NMH, as well as Henan and Luoyang museums from Henan province in mainland China. The largely brown, green and yellow items comprise animal and human figurines, everyday utensils and sacrificial objects.

“These vividly designed pieces warrant greater recognition and promotion,” NMH Director Chang Yui-tan said Feb. 24. “We are excited to enhance awareness of their aesthetic value in conjunction with our partners on the other side of the strait.”

According to Chang, the exhibition provides an authentic snapshot of social life during the heyday of the Tang dynasty. “Attire, elegance and color were the trademarks of these prosperous times,” he said.

The exhibition also provides detailed descriptions on the discovery of the pottery kiln sites, Chang said, as well as the excavation process carried out by construction workers during the 1920s on the Lianyungang-Lanzhou Railway in Henan.

“We are confident the event’s artistic prowess and cultural insights will captivate visitors from home and abroad and generate fresh interest in the beauty of tricolor glazed pottery.”
