The winners of Uneec Applied Design Award organized by local IT firm Chenming Mold Ind. Corp. were recently named in Taipei City, with students from National Taipei University of Technology claiming the lion’s share of honors.
Selected from an 818-strong field, the eight NTUT students took gold, silver and bronze in the event aimed at encouraging professional and student designers worldwide to pay more attention to the needs of consumers. A total of 29 recipients were praised for meeting assessment criteria such as functionality and ingenuity, sharing a cash prize of NT$690,000 (US$22,179).
“All of the winners worked tirelessly to create their exceptional works,” a CMIC official said. “It is crucial to recognize their talent and achievements.”
According to the official, gold went to Chen Yen-ling for Public Lock, a smart device using fingerprints to safeguard travelers’ luggage, with silver awarded to Chang Keng-tzu and Chiu Kai-hsin for Bee Fun, a syringe needle cap styled after the insect that makes injections less of a trauma for children.
Bronzes were picked up by Chang Li-chin, Li Jou and Liu Yun-ching, as well as Lin Yi-hsiang and Wang Po-hsuan, respectively. The former’s Bubble Click is a Bubble Wrap-inspired pillbox featuring flashing lights reminding users when to take medicine. Intelligent necklace Breather, produced by the latter, records asthma patients’ breathing patterns, sends data to doctors and dispenses respiratory spray during emergencies.
Special jury award went to a trio from National Taiwan University of Science and Technology. Cheng Yen-chang, Feng Mu-chun and Ma Hui-chuan’s pregnancy test strip Touch Sign features an area that bulges upon detecting signs of pregnancy, allowing ease of use by the visually impaired.
A total of 11 students received honorable mentions. They hail from NTUST, Oriental Institute of Technology and Tatung and Tungnan universities, as well as Jiangxi University of Finance and Economics in mainland China.
