The fifth season of “Taiwan to the World,” a documentary series produced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and National Geographic Channel, was unveiled Jan. 28 in Taipei City.
“Over the past decade, the MOFA and Nat Geo have turned out 22 episodes for the series,” President Ma Ying-jeou said during the launch ceremony at Huashan 1914 Creative Park. “These have claimed 14 international awards and reached millions of viewers worldwide.”
Also attending were MOFA Minister David Lin, National Geographic Channel Asia Senior Vice President Joanna Tsai and 24 ambassadors and Taiwan-based representatives from the nation’s diplomatic allies and partners.
According to the president, “Taiwan to the World 5: Island of Fish” will allow viewers to learn more about the robust development of the country’s fishing sector and long-standing ocean culture. “After making its worldwide premiere Feb. 2 in Taiwan, the series is certain to generate enormous interest in one of our most important industries,” he said.
Taiwan participates in a number of international fishing-related organizations and promotes fisheries cooperation talks whenever the opportunity arises, Ma said. “Although we are rock solid on protecting the rights of our fishermen, we abide by international regulations and treaties to safeguard fish stocks for future generations.”
Echoing Ma’s remarks, Lin said Taiwan has many remarkable stories of business achievements and technological advances. “These deserve to be professionally presented and given greater exposure on the international stage.
“Season five highlights the strong commercial, cultural and emotional ties our people have with the sea,” Lin said, adding that it offers a fascinating look at an array of areas like aquaculture, biotechnology, commercial fishing and cuisines.
“The series also showcases a number of local R&D initiatives charting a course toward sustainable ocean resources.”
Comprising five episodes titled “Amazing Aquarium,” “Big Catch,” “Fish Made-to-Order,” “Promised Fish” and “Taste of Fish,” the series will air outside Taiwan beginning July.
In addition, the MOFA and Nat Geo are staging an exhibition from Feb. 18 to March 1 at Huashan to celebrate the documentary’s launch and heighten awareness of the importance of Taiwan’s fishing industry.
“We invite all and sundry to visit and learn more about ‘Taiwan: Island of Fish,’” Lin said.
