TRA launches sci-fi-themed tourist train
2015-01-28
A sci-fi-themed tourist train was launched by Taiwan Railways Administration Jan. 26 in Taipei City, underscoring government efforts to strengthen the nation’s rail travel sector.
Boasting sky-blue carriages emblazoned with images of alien characters Mr. Ten and Miss One created by local artist Akibo Lee, Revolution No. 1001 is expected to play a significant role in lifting TRA ridership.
The train will operate on the Pingxi Line in New Taipei City from Jan. 27 to Feb. 3 before switching to the Neiwan Line in Hsinchu County Feb. 5-12. Starting Feb. 14, it is set to run permanently on the Jiji Line in Changhua and Nantou counties.
TRA Director-General Chou Yung-hui said the locomotive is certain to attract more travelers from home and abroad. “It will provide a visual treat and comfortable surrounds for fans of outer space and those more interested in down-to-earth experiences.”
Formerly DSC 1001, the diesel train was one of 36 acquired from Japan in 1998. It served as the TRA director-general’s emergency command center until remodeling in December 2014.
“The history of the locomotive will certainly appeal to rail enthusiasts,” Chou said, adding that it carried former Minister of Transportation and Communication Yeh Kuang-shih last May on an inspection tour along the Pingxi Line.
“We have no doubt that travelers will be queuing for the opportunity to explore Taiwan’s beauty on the new train.”
