Cityscape enhancement plan launched in Taipei
2015-01-20
A program upgrading the area neighboring Taipei Main Station is underway as part of local government efforts further enhancing the image of the nation’s capital.
“It is crucial to continue polishing the metropolis as it is the gateway to our country,” Taipei City Deputy Mayor Lin Chin-rong said Jan. 15 at the launch of the eight-year undertaking.
“As we look forward to the year-end opening of the city’s A1 metro station on the Taoyuan International Airport Line, it is high time to make preparations for the anticipated additional 200,000 tourists using the facility.”
According to Lin, the initiative runs from Huanhe North Road in the west to Zhongshan North Road in the east, and from Civic Boulevard in the north to Zhongxiao West Road in the south.
One highlight of the program is demolishing from February 2016 the 750-meter elevated road comprising Zhongxiao Bridge. “Once this 12-month undertaking is completed, we expect smoother traffic flows in the area,” Lin said.
Equally important is building a plaza to promote the city’s old North Gate and its storied past. Situated next to the soon-to-be-dismantled elevated road, the attraction will feature historic elements like a moat and a Qing dynasty (1644-1911) armory.
The gate is the only one of five not torn down between 1889 and 1901 during the Japanese colonial era (1895-1945).
In addition, the initiative incorporates rezoning to improve pedestrian safety and quality of life for residents, Lin said, adding that factors like cultural and industrial development will be carefully considered.
“We are committed to transforming Taipei into a more convenient, comfortable and captivating city.”
