NTM highlights Taiwan-US relations

An exhibition on exchanges between Taiwan and the U.S. kicked off Jan. 13 in Taipei City, spotlighting the countries’ robust ties since enactment of the Taiwan Relations Act in 1979.
Featuring such items as historical documents, memorabilia and vintage photos, the 20-day event touches upon themes like culture, economy, security and technology. It is staged at National Taiwan Museum in conjunction with the American Institute in Taiwan.
“The exhibition bears testament to the strength of our nations’ friendship,” NTM Director Chen Chi-ming said at the opening ceremony. “We believe visitors can gain a deeper understanding of the fruits of our partnership over the years.”
Echoing Chen’s remarks, AIT Director Christopher J. Marut praised the exhibition’s comprehensive displays. He also lauded the TRA for laying a firm foundation of friendship between Taiwan and the U.S.
According to Chen, one highlight is a collection of photographs from the three-day official visit to Taiwan last April of Gina McCarthy, administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. “Those shots are memorable as they document the first trip to our country by a senior U.S. official in 14 years,” he said.
Another highlight is a selection of pictures of the former American Consulate in Taiwan. “As well as a historic landmark, the building is now a cultural hotspot operated by the Taiwan Film and Culture Association,” Chen said.
Confident the exhibition will appeal to history buffs from home and abroad, Chen said NTM will continue staging similar events going forward in an effort to promote awareness of Taiwan’s special bonds with the U.S.
