HBSP industrial incubation center launched

2014-12-18

The Industrial and Incubation Center at Hsinchu Biomedical Science Park was launched Dec. 16, underscoring the government’s determination to fast-track development of the local healthcare sector.

Operated by the Industrial Technology Research Institute under the auspices of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, the center is part of the third comprehensive biotech cluster in Taiwan, following Pingtung Agricultural Biotechnology Park in Pingtung County and Taiwan Orchid Plantation in Tainan City.

Along with the HBSP’s Biomedical Technology and Product Research Center and HBSP Hospital, which will be opened next year and in 2018, respectively, the facility will provide comprehensive support for businesses and R&D work on high-end medical materials and new medicine. It in turn will propel local startups to join the international industrial chain.

“Biomedicine is a star industry of the 21st century. Its development has been a key focus of the government’s i-Taiwan 12 Projects since I took office in 2008,” President Ma Ying-jeou said at the event.

“The HBSP is one major plank in completing these projects. The center’s launch shows the progress that has been made and we are one step closer to seeing the country’s biomedical sector reach new heights.”

Also attending the ceremony were MOEA Deputy Minister Cho Shih-chao, Science and Technology Vice Minister Chen Ter-shing and Health and Welfare Vice Minister Shiu Ming-neng.

Echoing Ma’s remarks, Cho said he is optimistic about the center's further bolstering the biotech industry. While offering customized value-added services to industry players in a variety of areas including patenting strategies and technology transfer, the facility also organizes events to draw foreign investment and provide business matchmaking sessions.

The facility has attracted the interest of eight companies including Gamma & Beta Co. Ltd. and Taiwan Mitochondrion Applied Technology Co. Ltd. “I am certain the center will draw more companies and boost this emerging sector,”
