MOFA boosts closer ties with ASEAN economies

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs launched an initiative to strengthen Taiwan’s partnership with Association of Southeast Asian Nations member economies Dec. 11 with the premiere of a topical short film in Taipei City.
The 11-minute short “Together We Can” illustrates the significance of collaboration with ASEAN in Taiwan’s culturally and ethnically diverse society, especially in trade, investment, manufacturing and human resources, according to Manfred Peng, director-general of MOFA’s Department of International Information Services.
“Featuring the theme of brotherhood, this film demonstrates that by integrating the individual strengths of different peoples, we can achieve something great together,” he said. “ASEAN countries are crucial trade partners of Taiwan, and we look forward to forging more robust ties with them.”
These ties can be reinforced through regional integration initiatives, such as the Trans-Pacific Partnership and Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, Peng said. Facing the challenges of a highly competitive global marketplace, Taiwan and ASEAN economies can tap into each other’s advantages and join hands to create a win-win situation for all, he added.
“As a trusted and valued partner in the global manufacturing chain, Taiwan has earned a reputation for its excellent adaptability, creativity and technological knowledge. With our active participation in the TPP and RCEP, the regional economy would benefit from Taiwan’s dedication to lasting prosperity throughout the Asia-Pacific.”
Dubbed in English, Indonesian, Malay, Mandarin, Thai and Vietnamese, “Together We Can” will be broadcast to ASEAN audiences starting Dec. 11 through assorted media outlets, including YouTube.
MOFA will follow up with a wide range of activities next year, such as sending performance groups on cultural diplomacy tours throughout the region, according to the director-general.
