2014-12-01

Taiwan’s export processing zone output grew 13.49 percent year on year for the first 10 months of 2014 to US$11.97 billion, posting a trade surplus of US$4.26 billion, according to the Ministry of Economic Affairs Nov. 27.

Total employment in the EPZ reached 81,274, up by 6,050 from the same period last year. This number is expected to see continuous growth by year-end bolstered by five recent investments across EPZ campuses in Kaohsiung, Pingtung and Taichung.

A total of NT$1.9 billion (US$61.5 million) was capitalized for the investments, which are projected to create at least 255 job opportunities within the EPZ, an MOEA official said.

Sogotec Enterprise Co. Ltd. topped the list with an injection of NT$1.3 billion in central Taiwan’s Chungkang campus. The funds were used to set up a corporate headquarters and manufacture casting, drilling and flex-circuit laser cutting machines.

Sumeeko Industries Co. Ltd. spent NT$600 million establishing bolt, nut and screw processing operations in southern Taiwan’s Pingtung campus. Eyeing deployment in the Southeast Asian market, the firm plans to step up R&D capabilities and migrate to high-end value-added products.

Kaohsiung Software Technology Park added three investments totaling NT$82.9 million. The businesses involved range from advanced vehicle machinery to cloud-based app development and e-commerce platform establishment, according to the MOEA.
