YDU academic maps campus ecology in Miaoli

2014-11-26

An assistant professor at Yu Da University of Science and Technology (YDU) has charted the ecology of the institution’s campus in picturesque Chaochiao Township, Miaoli County.

Huang Chen-i, a member of the Department of Marketing and Logistics Management, said his map comprises photographs of 24 species of birds and insects shot over the past 11 years on campus. It was unveiled recently at an international symposium on environmental education at YDU.

“The location of the campus on the side of a hill has provided numerous opportunities for taking photos of the natural environment,” he said. “I do not wait for things to happen. Once I see a suitable subject, I grab my camera and shoot without hesitation.”

The assistant professor’s 400-plus albums uploaded to Facebook contain images of less common birds like the brown shrike, grey heron, Japanese white-eye, Malayan night heron river kingfisher and Taiwan Barbet. Other members of the animal kingdom also feature, including butterflies, bees and even the colorful common carp in the campus pond.

According to Huang, he started taking photographs during his days as a university student and is by no way ready to call time on what is proving to be a highly educational and worthwhile pastime.

YDU student Chan Hao-che said Huang’s map opened her eyes to the diversity of animal and insect life in and around the university. “We should pay attention to more than just our studies and develop a greater awareness of the environment.”
