The winners of the Taipei Urban Landscape Award were honored Nov. 19 in a ceremony by the local government’s Department of Urban Development.
Staged at Taipei Urban Design Center, the 12th edition of the awards saw six projects receive prizes from 54 submissions. The 13-member judging panel assessed the entries on their success in creating space across a variety of categories such as community, creativity, historic, public-private sector and urban.
Grand prize went to Landscape Sky, a split-level multipurpose outdoor area constructed from wood and steel melding seamlessly into the hillside campus of National Chengchi University in Wenshan District. The project also includes “Jelly Wall,” an eye-catching installation art piece fashioned from used plastic buckets and LED lighting.
Created by a group of students from the Graduate Institute of Architectural Art at Tainan National University of the Arts, Landscape Sky was overseen by TNUA associate professor Lu Li-huang.
According to Lin Shu-wen, project coordinator at NCCU’s Office of General Affairs, Landscape Sky earned top prize as it extends human movement through an innovative structure utilizing environmentally friendly building materials. “Jelly Wall” is also special in that its soft lighting is alluring and generates an atmosphere rich with possibilities, he said.
Four special prizes went respectively to Nung Chan Monastery of, scenic design in Nanmen Park of National Taiwan Museum, Shibenyuan Temple square restoration and URS27M public square—a recreated martial arts community in Yangminshan.
The most popular design award, determined through internet voting, went to Daan Forest Park metro station on the Xinyi Line.
