MOHW commends medicos for top contributions
2014-11-13
A total of 36 physicians from hospitals operated by the Ministry of Health and Welfare were commended Nov. 11 for exemplary service and outstanding contributions to local health care.
“The inaugural awards are part of Nov. 12 Doctors’ Day and honor those going above and beyond the call of duty,” MOHW Deputy Minister Lin Tzou-yien said. “Many of our recipients serve in remote locations and thoroughly deserve this special recognition.”
Among the winners, Dr. Chang Shih-lie, Dr. Kuo Ji-zhi and Dr. Li Chun-te received recognition for their respective 30-plus years of service, while Dr. Chen Hou-chuan, Dr. Hsu Yuan-nian and Dr. Li Hsi-hsin were honored for their special achievements.
Of the latter group, Chen was lauded for bringing Taiwan’s advanced capabilities and technologies to places in need of medical assistance. Since founding the International Action and Cooperation Team in 2000, he has visited over 30 countries and regions, including Fiji, Haiti, India, Malawi, Nepal and Tibet, to assist with local medical emergencies.
Equally praiseworthy was Hsu, who in his capacity as the director of MOHW’s Taoyuan Hospital, notched up significant success in controlling expenses while enhancing service standards, setting an example for public hospitals nationwide.
Another leader on the homefront was Li Hsi-hsin, widely considered the guardian of health in Taiwan’s outlying Kinmen County where he has served for the last 23 years. The outpatient program Li started in Lieyu Township 13 years ago has played an integral role in helping the islands weather various epidemics, such as SARS in 2003.
Upgraded from the Cabinet’s Department of Health in 2013, the MOHW operates 26 hospitals with 1,355 physicians across Taiwan.
