Cloud Gate completes new complex in Tamsui

2014-11-12

Work was completed on Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan’s culture and art education center, the first build-operate-transfer project for the performing arts in Taiwan, Nov. 10 in Tamsui District, New Taipei City.

“It feels like a dream come true to finally have a home of our own after 41 years,” Cloud Gate founder Lin Hwai-min said. “We owe everything we have achieved to the loyal support of our audiences the world over.”

Situated on the former site of Radio Taiwan International’s Tamsui campus next to historic Hobe Fort, the center was designed by acclaimed Taiwan architect Huang Sheng-yuan. The 1.5-hectare hillside campus cost NT$660 million (US$21.6 million) and was funded solely by private-sector donations, including a grant of US$5 million by Chicago-based Alphawood Foundation.

Boasting a 450- and two 150-seat theaters, as well as an outdoor arena stage capable of seating 1,500, Lin said the complex is to serve as the troupe’s permanent residence for the next half century.

“The entire Cloud Gate family used to drift from place to place,” he said. “But from Jan. 5 next year when the facility is fitted out, we will be working under the same roof for the first time.”

According to Lin, use of the education center is not limited to Cloud Gate activities. “All arts groups are welcome to perform and rehearse here while we are away,” he said, adding that the multifunctional venues can also accommodate conferences, exhibitions and seminars.

“We envisage the complex becoming the cultural center of Tamsui after opening to the public next April.”
