2014-11-10

A Taiwan vet will assume the presidency of Belgium-based World Veterinary Association commencing 2017, the first time for the WVA to be headed by an ROC national and member from Asia.

The announcement was welcomed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. “Johnson Chiang’s naming will enhance the nation’s global profile in key areas such as animal farming and disease prevention,” MOFA spokeswoman Anna Kao said.

“We congratulate the incoming president and offer every assistance in facilitating international exchanges and partnerships.”

Taipei City-based Chiang is currently WVA vice president and president of Thailand-headquartered Federation of Asian Veterinary Associations. He is the past president of Taipei Veterinary Association and Taiwan Veterinary Association.

According to Chiang, he will spare no effort in promoting international cooperation and training projects, as well as sharing Taiwan’s abundant research results. “I am also committed to highlighting our achievements in animal health care while representing WVA at meetings of global partners like World Organization for Animal Health and World Health Organization,” he said.

Chiang is set to assume the WVA presidency at the 33rd World Veterinary Congress staged in three years’ time at Incheon, South Korea.

Taiwan joined WVA under the name of Taiwan Veterinary Medical Association in 1981. The global body comprises around 90 related associations from countries and territories.
