Taiwan scores well in IRML math competition

Two teams from Taiwan turned in praiseworthy performances at the recently concluded International Regions of Math League competition in Las Vegas, reaffirming the nation’s reputation as a global leader in the field of study.
Comprising nine students and an alumnus of New Taipei City’s Municipal Zhonghe Senior High School, the teams finished third and sixth, respectively, in the May 30-31 meet. The IRML Onsite Division comprised eight sides from countries and territories such as Macau, the Philippines, Vietnam and mainland China.
Yang Chia-lin, one of six MZSH math teachers advising the team, said the secret to the teams’ strong performance is a nontraditional approach to math teaching. “Students are encouraged to solve problems on their own, with just occasional advice from the teachers.
“Instead of showing them what formulas to use, we want them to think outside the box and propose solutions based on what they learned in the past,” she said, adding that group discussions also hammer home the importance of team work and help make class more challenging and interesting.
The teams’ creativity and logical approach to problem solving was recognized by Mark Haiman, a professor of mathematics at University of California, Berkeley. The respected academic wrote to the members inviting them to apply for admission to the prestigious institution.
MZSH student Hsu Hao-sheng said he could not believe it when he read the letter. “I am delighted that my hard work and talent has been recognized. This experience will give me more confidence as I continue studying mathematics.”
Fellow team member Chen Sing-shuo said he used to hate math in junior high, but the teaching approach employed at MZSH resulted in a rethink. “Although I have no plans to study abroad, the invitation is a valuable affirmation for me.”
