MOEA names top innovative firms in Taiwan

2014-11-04

A total of 20 Taiwan businesses were unveiled Oct. 30 as the nation’s leading innovative enterprises in a survey released by the Ministry of Economic Affairs.

Top spot went to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd., followed by Wowprime Corp. and Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. Ltd. This year is the first for Hon Hai to secure a top-three ranking.

“These firms are representative of Taiwan’s innovation capabilities and industrial prowess,” a MOEA official said. “Rest assured, the government will continue promoting their achievements and encouraging them to scale new heights.”

TSMC was honored for its 28-nano High Performance Compact process, cutting-edge technology seen as the most power- and cost-efficient solution among all like technologies in the foundry segment.

Wowprime Corp., one of the biggest restaurant operators in Taiwan, was praised for its flexible and versatile practices in the highly competitive sector by opening eateries catering to all kinds of budgets and tastes. And Hon Hai was recognized for its avant-garde cross-sector collaboration measures in launching cloud server products and intelligent living services. Its partners include U.S.-based Hewlett-Packard Co. and Softbank Corp. from Japan.

The official said many of the businesses share similar traits. “In addition to operating across a variety of sectors, more than half of them are involved in interindustry alliances, with many seeking upgrades and transformation to capitalize on trends of cloud computing, Internet of Things and smart cities.”

Compiled on the basis of responses from more than 1,000 corporate executives from Taiwan’s top 5,000 firms, as well as opinion leaders from various sectors, the survey also considered the financial performance of the companies.
