The fourth annual LPGA Taiwan Championship was launched Oct. 28 with a welcome reception hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at Taipei Guest House.
“Taiwan boasts a glorious history in the sport,” Vice President Wu Den-yih said. “Yani Tseng reigned as top female golfer for 109 consecutive weeks from 2011 to 2013, and Pan Cheng-tsung claimed gold at the recent Asian Games in South Korea.”
“I wish all the competitors the best of luck in their endeavors and hope they enjoy the wonderful experience our nation has to offer.”
Offering a purse of US$2 million, the championship runs Oct. 30 to Nov. 2 at Miramar Golf Country Club in New Taipei City’s Linkou District. Tseng will lead the Taiwan contingent of Yao Hsuan-yu and Candie Kung at the event, which has attracted 81 players from over 20 countries and territories.
Seven of the world’s top 10 golfers are contesting the event sponsored for the first time by Fubon Financial Holdings Co. These are Lydia Ko of New Zealand, two-time championship winner Suzann Pettersen of Norway, world No. 1 Park In-bee and Ryu So-yeon of South Korea, Stacy Lewis and Michelle Wie of the U.S. and Feng Shanshan of mainland China.
